About CUA

CUA was formed by a group of concerned businesses and municipalities when ATC selected the Beltline as a possible route for a high voltage transmission line. The result of locating the line on the busiest stretch of highway in the state outside of Milwaukee could yield several negative impacts, including aesthetics, decreased safety, and devaluation of property. Rather than pit neighborhoods and municipalities against each other by lobbying to locate the line elsewhere, CUA sought a solution: Bury the Line.

Placing the line underground lessens the negative impacts that come along with overhead transmission lines. The Beltline is the shortest of the two routes, and provides an existing corridor in which the line could be buried. Adjacent to the Beltline are millions of real estate dollars that stand to decrease in value. The members of CUA realize that a decrease in value along this stretch of highway will be detrimental to the entire county, as it will likely cause an increase in property taxes and a decrease in available public funds for schools and law enforcement. Additionally, an overhead transmission line adds the potential for blight and restricts property owner's options for building and landscaping, which hampers development and redevelopment efforts.

CUA is promoting the undergrounding of this line because it is a solution that works for everyone.
